Product Review: Kiehl’s Superbly Restorative Body Lotion and Dry Oil

When I traveled in Morocco a few years back, my friends and I had a running joke of how everything was Berber quality. The Berber people make beautiful handicrafts and as a selling point, every merchant we encountered claimed their wares were of Berber quality. Obviously most items were not actually made by Berbers and were of poor quality. We didn’t actually encounter any Berber’s in Morocco, or their authentic goods. It wasn’t until we stepped of the train, when we arrived home in France that we finally saw a Berber woman – go figure.
So when I saw that Kiehl’s had launched a new line called Superbly Restorative, which uses argan oil produced by Berber women, I had to snigger a little. But looking into it further, I can see this Berber quality is for real! Not only is it for real, but is socially responsible too. The oil is produced from the nuts of the Argan tree, by the Fair Trade Targanine Women’s Cooperative in the Atlas Moutains of Morocco. Not only does the cooperative provide women with an income, it promotes literacy and the training of women. It also plants new trees to help preserve the forests and the oil is Certified Organic.
To top off their good-doings, the Superbly Restorative collection is sold in bottles made from 100% recycled plastic.
But the Fair Trade oil and recycled packaging aren’t just a way to get you to buy these products - these products stand out on their own. The Body Lotion is nice and rich, but has a light citrus scent and soaks in quickly. I didn’t have any greasy residue with this one and it kept my skin moisturized all day. The Dry Oil has a citrusy-woodsy smell (but not too strong) and can be used on your skin or hair. I’ve tried it on the ends of my hair for a little added moisture and on my expanding pregnant belly. Like the lotion it soaks in quickly and wasn’t sticky or greasy. It added a nice shine to my hair too!
So, if you are looking for a good moisturizer or a dry oil and want to help do right by the earth and your fellow woman, I encourage you to check this product out.
