A Product I Didn’t Know I Needed Until I Tried It: Clarsskin Underarm Cleanser

When I first received a sample of Clarsskin Underarm Cleaner I wasn’t sure how it could really differ from a bar of soap. This product is a cleanser specifically for your underarms. It is aimed a removing antiperspirant deodorant residue helping to get you really clean and help prevent underarm staining on your clothes.
I definitely feel like my deodorant never really comes off when I wash. It’s like it’s waterproof – doing exactly what it’s designed to do – repel moisture. Soap alone doesn’t help, only shaving seems to really even get it off. But then your razor is filled with deodorant gunk. Especially the multiblade razors would clog up really easily and I’d have to toss them frequently.
When I got Clarsskin and was reading the bottle, it says you can use it as a cleanser, but also for shaving. I first used it for shaving and thought it worked really well. I was surprised to see that not only did my razor not get gunked up, but the blades actually looked a little cleaner than when I started. My underarms didn’t necessarily feel any cleaner than after a normal shave, so I tried to just use the product to wash the next day. I rubbed it on like body wash to my underarms and rinse, but they didn’t feel any cleaner. I took another look at the directions and it says to leave the product on for a bit before rinsing. So I applied some more, washed my hair and face and then rinsed – much better! My undearrms didn’t have that sticky feeling and did feel really clean.
The website for Clarsskin explains that the product contains chelating agents to help remove the metal particles that make antiperspirant deodorants so effective, but hard to remove. I remember reading a few years back about concerns that the metals in antiperspirant deodorants might lead to health problems like breast cancer. I’m not sure whatever came of that concern, but I have always wondered at the safety of daily rubbing metals onto my skin for my body to absorb. A foray into natural deodorants was short lived – they just didn’t seem to work. So at least with Clarsskin, I can get the metals off for a little while.
I also really liked reading the ingredients list. You’d think that a product that removes metalic residue would contain all sorts of harsh ingredients, but this one has all sorts of nice things – rosemary leaf oil, aloe leaf juice, orange peel oil, lime oil and lavender oil – listed amongst a handful of the regular unpronounceable ingredients. All of those oils give the unfragranced product a nice, light citrus scent.
I haven’t tested the claim of the product that it helps prevent discoloration on clothes, but it makes me want to try wearing white t-shirts again!
