Great Deal On Mineral Makeup With bareMinerals Surprise Collection

I’m a sucker for things in a pretty package, so when I stopped into Bare Escentuals the other day to buy some foundation, I was immediately taken by the bareMinerals “Surprise” Collection. The collection features three different eye colors, one blush, an all-over face shimmer, lip gloss, and three brushes for $54.00. Inside of each box is a ticket to enter a contest to win a lifetime supply of their foundation. The salesperson compared it to Willy Wonka’s “golden tickets.”
Doubting my likelihood of actually winning the contest*, I bought the collection because it was a good deal ($145.00 worth of products), the colors looked nice, and it certainly is a pretty package. Cribbing their website’s language, here’s what’s inside the box:
* bareMinerals Secret Radiance All-Over Face Color (sheer, golden glow) (size: medium)
* bareMinerals Spellbound Eyecolor (whispery pink) (size: small)
* bareMinerals Surreal Eyecolor (champagne sunset) (size: small)
* bareMinerals Suspense Liner Shadow (inky teal) (size: small)
* bareMinerals Intrigue Blush (soft rose) (size: small)
* Double-Ended bareMinerals Natural Lipgloss in Brilliance & Angel Food Cake (nude rose, sheer peach shimmer)
* Soft Sweep Cheek Brush
* Tapered Crease Defining Brush
* Line Diffuser Brush
I generally avoid shimmery eye colors because sparkles draw attention to fine lines and they can look too young. The three eye colors in this collection do have shimmer because of the Hematite. I wouldn’t wear these colors to work, but they worked well for the wedding I attended this weekend. The color palate for the eye colors is basic and would flatter just about any skin tone. I wet the line diffuser brush to create a smoky eye with the Suspense Liner Shadow and it came out nicely. Using a dark shadow with a bit of color instead of just black helps to highlight the colors in your eye.
The All-Over Face Color is very warm. It will do best on olive and dark skin tones, but for my pale complexion I think the Sheer Radiance is still a better bet. The blush is great and would work well for most skin tones; despite the name, it seems to have more of a peach than rose hue. The one thing from this kit that I’ll probably never use is the Brilliance/Angel Food Cake lip gloss; it’s a very coral color that would go best on super dark skin. Also, the Angel Food Cake has sparkles in it, and I tried to stop wearing sparkly lip gloss around the eighth grade…
Final verdict: I won’t use all of the products, but the ones I will use were still a lot less expensive as part of a collection than had I purchased them singly.
* You don’t actually have to buy this to enter the contest, just send ‘em a SASE.
