Flaunt Your Pout With Rimmel’s Lasting Finish Intense Wear Lipstick And N.Y.C.’s Ultra Last Lipwear

I get a little sentimental this time of year; I’m definitely a summer gal, but the falling leaves and cooling temperatures remind me of drinking hot cocoa at high school football games, gathering with friends and family over the holidays, and some of my favorite winter styles. Yes, it’s time to pull those deliciously soft cashmere sweaters out of storage and dust off your favorite suede boots. It’s also time to bust out one of my very favorite cool weather styles – the RED lip! Don’t get me wrong, you can do red just about any time of the year, but the dramatic hue tends to look better with darker days and typically deeper color palate of winter clothing.
I recently tried a few different reds from both Rimmel London and N.Y.C. As a total lipstick junkie, it’s great to find great shades at affordable prices (Rimmel’s Lasting Finish Intense Wear Lipstick retails at $5.20 and N.Y.C.’s Ultra Last Lipwear is a bargain at $1.99). Rimmel isn’t joking in labeling this stuff lasting and intense – both of the colors I tried, Alarm and Temptation, went on perfectly with just one swipe per lip – and they are bright, bright, bright. The colors were actually a little too bright for me and I struggled mightily to remove the color from my lips, supporting the “lasting finish” claim quite well! It’s also a softer application compared to many other long-last lipsticks. I didn’t care for the overpowering cherry scent of the lipsticks, but then again it’s not “Rimmel Lasting Finish Smell Good Intense Wear Lipstick”… I went online to Rimmel’s Virtual Makeover to see what colors might go better with my skin tone, but the site stopped working after I loaded my picture (could be incompatible with Safari browsers?). Anyway, for those of you on a PC it looks like a fun tool.
The N.Y.C. Ultra Last Lipwear went on softer and smoother than Rimmel, but it wiped off easier so there’s a give and take. I loved the color “Sheer Red,” which seemed to have just the right amount of blue undertones to compliment my fair complexion. Beauty Tip: fair-skinned folks do better with blue undertones and more olive complexions should look for yellow/orange undertones. This one does feel super-moisturizing, but it also had the cherry chapstick scent – though less pronounced.
At prices like these, you can afford to buy a few different hues for day/nighttime. However, if you decide to go for the va-va-voom red look, make sure that the rest of your face is toned down (*ahem* Courtney Love – or Taylor Momsen to you youngins). Outside of the timeless sex appeal of red lips, you might ask: why else should I go for red lips? For one, red lipstick makes your teeth look whiter. Another? A softer red lipstick can double up as a blusher in a pinch – dot a small triangle on the apples of your cheeks and then use your fingers to blend the color in. Pat down with a little powder to mute the color and help it stick.
