Looking Good Made Easy: Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Perfect Smoky Eyes Kit

Last month I reviewed the Instant Definition Eye Shadow Palette in Storm from Sally Hansen’s Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy line. The eye palette is a great idea: it contains 3 shadows that are marked with directions on where to apply them to achieve that perfectly applied shadow look. The company has done themselves one better and combined the palette with a black liquid liner and black mascara in their Perfect Smoky Eyes Kit.

You start out with the lining your upper and lower lashes and then smudging it with a cotton swab. Smudging is great for those of us unpracticed with liquid liner – you don’t have to get the line perfectly straight. Next you apply the shadows: start with the shimmery black on the lid, then the shimmery dark gray goes in the crease and a shimmery silver highlighter goes just below the eyebrow and in the inner corner of your eye. Like I said it my previous review, it comes with a sponge applicator that applied the eyeshadow a little stronger than I like. I tossed it and used eyeshadow brushes. (Tip: either use 3 different brushes or make sure you wipe all the darker color off the brush on a tissue before you try to apply the lighter shades).

Top it off with the mascara on your top and bottom lashes. The Lift & Define mascara has a brush that looks like the threads of a screw. It did a good job of coating my lashes, but did have a tendency to clump. The second time I used it, I was sure to apply only one coat at a time and give it ample time to dry before applying another.

While the kit makes it easy to have all the products you need for the smoky eye look, applying it correctly so you look smokin’ and not scary can take some practice. My tip for practicing: try applying the makeup at night before you wash your face. That way, if it doesn’t look so great you are about to wash it off anyways. Practice a few nights in a row before you’re ready to debut your new look and you’ll have it down!
