I got an early holiday gift last week in the form of Lorac’s Holiday Smoked Out Collection. The collection is encased in a super-cute, black mini “Lizard” makeup bag and holds lots of shiny, sparkly goodies. What’s inside? Lip Polish in “Bliss,” a Cheek Stamp in “Island Spice,” a Pencil Eye Shadow/Liner in “Midnight Sparkle,” and a Starry Eyed Baked Eye Shadow Trio in “Rising Star.”
At a first glance, these colors appear to be suited for a super-glam night out. They are bright, bold colors and – with loads of shine and sparkle – probably not office wear. After doing my “normal” routine of moisture, spot covering, and foundation, I first applied the Eye Shadow Trio. Like most eye shadow trios, this one offers a light shade (presumably for all over the lid), medium shade (lash to crease), and a dark shade (along lash line and then contour in crease). The light shade is a very, very light white and probably better for highlighting under the brow and in the corners of the eye than all over. I still used a bisque/cream shade for all over. The medium and dark shades are in a very pretty light emerald green and then a deeper jade. Though I normally stick with neutral shadows, I really liked the look of these greens. The colors are dark in the compact, but you can apply them gently for a subtle color.
I then put on the “Midnight Sparkle” shadow/liner (it’s a thicker pencil, so you’ll need a different size sharpener because the kit doesn’t come with one). The color is black with lots and lots of glitter. I used it as a liner and the effect looked cool, but I absolutely would not wear this until after the sun goes down. For a product with so much glitter, it goes on more smoothly than others, but the color still chunks up a bit – I’ve yet to try glittery eyeliner that doesn’t chunk a bit on application. Also, I removed it later with eye makeup remover, and a fair amount of glitter stayed behind. The red, tired eyes with dark circles morning-after look is ever-so-nice with remnants of glitter rimming your puffed peepers… Just sayin’.
After a quick coat of my own mascara, the “Island Spice” cheek stamp and “Bliss” lip polish finished the look. The cheek stamp is something I’ve never seen before: a blusher compact with a spring-loaded sponge applicator. This one gets points for coolness, but I worry that the sponge applicator would pick up oil from your face and lose its utility after time; however it’s great for on-the-run! “Island Spice” is a very deep mauve shade. For my fair skin, it was too deep, but I would use it under my cheekbones as a contour; it could also be good as an eye shadow because it’s not too red. Probably this color is best as a blush on someone with dark skin. The lip polish also gets cool points because it is in a container that looks and goes on like nail polish. This color is super-high gloss, very shiny, and almost a plastic look. “Bliss” is a metallic light pink/tan color and, with the thickness of color and high shine, it sort of made me feel like a Fembot. So, again, this color would be great on super dark skin (unless, of course, you’re going for the Fembot look).
I love makeup collections because they tend to offer you a screaming price over the regular MSRP of the individual components. Lorac’s Holiday Smoked Out collection is no exception and retails for $18.50 (and the website says it’s $90 worth of products). This would make an awesome gift for any of your girlfriends who like getting glammed up and going out (of course, who doesn’t?) or, at this low price, even yourself!
