My New Favorite Skincare Line: Algenist
I hate to play favorites with so many good products out there, but I’ve fallen head-over-heels for Algenist. This anti-aging line of products has revived my skin in a week’s worth of use, after 3 months of other products have failed to help. After I had my baby 3 months ago, my skin got crazy dry. I used to suffer from oily skin and was suddenly faced with skin so dry that it was itchy scaly. I don’t really have many fine lines or wrinkles yet, but the dry nature of my skin was leaving fine lines that an aesthetician said would turn into wrinkles if I didn’t get my skin hydrated.
I’ve drastically changed my skincare routine: a mild cleaners only at night to remove makeup, no acne products (even though I’m still getting some breakouts) and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! But it wasn’t until I received my samples from Algenist’s line that my skin is finally no longer feeling parched.
Algenist has a very odd beginning. A biotech company looking at algae as a possible source for a renewable energy source, found alguronic acid in the algae during their research. It didn’t have any applicability for renewable energy, but they saw that it allowed microalgae cells to regenerate and protect themselves in harsh conditions. So the Algenist folks started to see how it would work in skincare. Tests found that it increased elastin production up to 32% and cellular regeneration up to 55%. Their before and after pictures are pretty impressive.
I tested out the complete line: Concentrated Reconstructing Serum, Regenerative Anti-Aging Moisturizer (also available with SPF 20) and Complete Eye Renewal Balm. All 3 come in simple packaging. The products are white and unscented. Applying all 3 morning and night has really improved, not only my dryness, but has also left my skin feeling softer, plumper and looking a whole lot more radiant. I also like that it has done so without the greasiness that I was getting with some of the other heavy duty moisturizers I was using. Some of those were having the side effect of making me breakout, but I haven’t had that problem with Algenist. In fact, my red spots and congested pores are reducing too.
The serum smooths on easily after I cleanse my skin. It provides a little hydration, but the Moisturizer really get’s my skin feeling great. A little goes a long way and absorbs pretty quickly. The Eye Balm is like a concentrated form of the moisturizer – you only need a tiny bit and it absorbs quickly. My makeup still worked great over the formulas and my skin felt well moisturized all day long.
Price-wise, the line is a little pricey, but certainly not as ridiculous as many breakthrough anti-aging lines. Plus they launched this month at Sephora, so you can go in and ask for a sample to try out before you buy. And with the small amounts you need to apply, these products will last a good amount of time.
